How to Hide the Rules in an Escape Room
A bad escape-room puzzle sits on the wall: here is the rule, here is the clue, there is the lock. A good one hides the rule inside the room itself, so that looking around is the same act as solving. That difference — a puzzle you read versus a place you act in — is the single most important thing the studio had to learn, and it learned it by building the wrong room first.
The first room you could actually stand inside looked like this:

An empty box, a puzzle scrawled onto one wall, a keypad on the door. Being able to stand inside a real 3D cube instead of looking at a flat screen changed nothing that mattered: it was still a worksheet with a lock stapled on. The design notes don't celebrate this room — they cite it as the cardinal anti-pattern, the exact shape every new build is now checked against and rejected for.
A room is a place you act in
The fix wasn't a feature; it was a definition the studio backed into by failing: a room is a place you act in. You look around it, open things, collect things, carry them, find where they belong. The puzzle can't sit on a wall to be read — it has to be built into the objects, so that exploring the room and solving it become the same act. (The studio's word for that shape is a funnel: a runway of small moves converging on the locked door — the opposite of a puzzle with a lock bolted onto it.)
Disguise the rule as world-logic
And the sharpest move — the one that actually hides a rule — is this: when a rule has to be present, you disguise it as world-logic instead of stating it. "These two can't be next to each other" stops being an instruction and becomes "these two reagents react." The rule is still entirely there; the player just meets it as physics, not as a rulebook. Nothing on any wall announces the rule — and the player follows it perfectly anyway. (How the studio does that reliably is one of the things it keeps in-house; the principle is enough for the record.)

Learn that, and the same cube — same lock, same door — stops being a box:


Nothing is scrawled on a wall anymore. The story is in the objects, the answer is in the objects, and the player never notices the seam between exploring and solving.
What to take from this
If a player can point at where the puzzle is, you have built a checkpoint. Hide the rule in the world instead — make the objects carry it, and disguise any rule you can't remove as a fact about how the place works — and looking around the room becomes the same act as solving it. The best puzzle in a place is the one the player never notices is a puzzle.
